Personalized License Plates

Before making a trip to your local tax collector’s office, use this service to find out if a proposed personalized plate configuration is available.

Personalized license plates may be issued to any motor vehicle owner or lessee except a vehicle which requires "Restricted," "Apportioned," "Wrecker," or dual (two) truck license plates.  If applying by mail or on another person’s behalf, an application for personalized license plate must be submitted to the license plate agency for approval or rejection of license plate choices to ensure that obscene or objectionable choices are not processed. Cost is an additional $12 annual fee for each personalized license plate. Application for personalized license plate may be submitted at any time during the year. License plates are issued for the current registration period unless application is made during the advance registration period (3 months preceding the owner's birth month or designated registration period). When application is made during the advance registration period and full registration tax is paid, the license plate will expire the following year.

The license plate characters must be entered carefully on the application for personalized license plate  to ensure that the license plate is ordered correctly.

• If you want the configuration CENTERED on the license plate, you must enter enough spaces before and after the configuration on the application to account for all allowable characters on the license plate (5 for a left logo and 8 for a center logo).

• Personalized specialty motorcycle plates are not automatically centered and can only have a maximum of 6 letters or numbers, including spaces and dashes.

• If characters are not being printed over the center design two spaces must be left in the center to allow for the design to be visible.

• The law permits a maximum of seven alphanumeric characters on plates with a center logo. Spaces or hyphens may be used as long as the total number of digits does not exceed eight. License plates with a left logo must not exceed five characters including spaces and dashes.

• The letter “O” should never be used. Instead, use the number “0” as the letter “O”.

Personalized license plates for motorcycles are only available as a "Florida Graphic" or "Motorcycle Specialty" license plate.
