Florida Driver License or ID Card Renewal, Replacement, Address Change, or Name Change

Need to renew, replace, change your address, or change your name on your Florida driver license or ID card?  Follow these 6 easy steps!

The US Federal Real ID Act (https://www.dhs.gov/real-id) requires EVERYONE to become REAL ID compliant after January 1, 2011. A STAR on your current Florida driver license or Florida ID card means you are Real ID compliant. There are a couple of different designs in circulation – examples of Real ID compliant Florida driver licenses are shown on the right.

If you are renewing or replacing your driver license or ID card, you have a STAR on your license, and no information is changing, no additional documentation is required.

If you are renewing or replacing your driver license or ID card and you DO NOT have a STAR on your license OR if you are changing your address or name, you must present additional documentation.

You can renew your Florida Driver License up to 18 months or your ID Card up to 12 months in advance. You won’t lose any time by renewing early. It will just extend your expiration date.

1.  Processing Options - Online or In Office

Nationwide records accessVitalChek (https://www.vitalchek.com) a private company, sells the following certificates nationwide:

Although we don’t “officially” endorse this company and there are other competitors on the internet, customers have told us that they have obtained their records from this company when they were in a time crunch. (It is also the official 3rd party provider recommended by the Florida Department of Health.)

Even if you were born in another county, the local office can access and print most birth certificates for persons born anywhere in Florida.
