SCAM ALERT: Fraudulent Text Messages Impersonating FLHSMV
BRADENTON – The Office of Tax Collector Ken Burton Jr., in coordination with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), is alerting the public to a series of fraudulent text messages falsely claiming to be from FLHSMV.
These scam messages often warn recipients of overdue traffic tickets or suspended licenses and demand immediate payment through suspicious links. In some cases, the texts claim enforcement actions will begin unless payment is made by a certain date.

These messages are not legitimate. FLHSMV will never ask for payment or personal information via text message.
“We want our residents to be aware of these scams and to know how to protect themselves,” said Ken Burton Jr., Tax Collector for Manatee County. “If you receive a suspicious message, don’t click on any links or respond.”
How to Stay Safe:
- Do not click on any links in suspicious texts.
- Report scam messages to the Florida Attorney General’s Office at www.myfloridalegal.com/consumer-protection/consumer-alerts.
- Verify the status of your license directly at https://services.flhsmv.gov/DLCheck/.
